Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs
YEAR: 2009
DIRECTOR: PHIL LORD, CHRIS MILLER
FILMED IN 3D: YES
This list is heavy in animation simply because CG animated films have found it easy, and been quick, to convert to 3D for their theatrical releases, and because so many of them have done it so darn well. This was a comparatively little-seen effort, since hardly anyone in the UK knows the book on which it's based (a classic in the US), but it's so packed with tiny quick gags, charming characters and, well, giant food falling from the sky that you'd have to be Ebeneezer Scrooge (pre-ghosts) not to fall in love with it.
Best Bit: It's a toss-up between the initial rain of cheeseburgers, and the later fight through a floating food mountain to save the town from disaster.

How To Train Your Dragon 3D

How To Train Your Dragon
YEAR: 2010
DIRECTOR: DEAN DEBLOIS, CHRIS SAUNDERS
FILMED IN 3D: YES

This was maybe the first time that a DreamWorks movie stepped up and challenged Pixar on its own ground, mixing real emotion and heart-stopping adventure in a film that came out of nowhere and enchanted everyone who saw it. The story of an outsider boy who learns that the dragons his people have been fighting may actually be the key to their survival, it's an utterly charming tale of unlikely friendship and challenging prejudice. It also has the most enormous, breathtaking climax of any film this year, one guaranteed to have you on the edge of your seat with your heart in your mouth. Sometimes, our heroes don't overcome impossible odds without a scratch.
Best Bit: Hiccup and his dragon Toothless finally go on a soaring flight that will leave you wishing wanting a flying reptile for Christmas.

YEAR: 2009
DIRECTOR: JAMES CAMERON
FILMED IN 3D: YES
Never accuse James Cameron of being less than dedicated. The director who has twice created the biggest film of all time spent more than a decade waiting for technology to catch up with his ideas and developing cameras capable of capturing them. The results, however, were earth-shaking, Hollywood-changing and jaw-dropping. This isn't 3D-sploitation, with objects flying out of the screen towards the viewer. This is 3D as an immersive world, creating an entirely believable and utterly enchanting other planet to explore. As more and more films use 3D, this is the model they should be following.
Best Bit: The flying sequences, as Jake learns to manage his banshee and fly far above the Pandoran forest. But it's all great.

Space Stations 3D

Space Station 3D

YEAR: 2002
DIRECTOR: TONI MYERS
FILMED IN 3D: YES

Bonus points for this one being shot partly by bona-fide astronauts. In space. It also takes in Cape Canaveral in the US and Star City in Russia, but combines to give us the closest thing you're going to get to actually going into space, what with commercial spaceflight obstinately refusing to actually exist yet. It might be a little dry for non-space geeks, despite the best efforts of narrator Tom Cruise, but if you are a space fan, this is essential viewing. It's also one of the best of the many Imax-specific documentaries shot on the format, any one of which is worthy of your time.
Best Bit: The launch sequences, which are simply spectacular in 3D.
